An architect reworked disused delivery containers right into a tiny home village for the homeless in Las Vegas, the place greater than 1,800 folks have lived.

Stalk, who was a former professor of architecture, worked with students to come up with ideas on how the containers could be converted into homes in Las Vegas, Nevada. He eventually created prototypes that he refined to be accessible and government approved. The community known as Share Village was founded in 1994. Read More.

Tiny House Village' aims to turn shipping containers into affordable veteran housing

A ceremonial groundbreaking for "Tiny House Village" in Las Vegas was held on Monday. The initial plan would start with 11 units.

"It takes vets off the streets and provides permanent housing for them," said Founder Arnold Stalk told KSNV-TV. "This is a precursor to next development of 100 homes, hopefully right next door."  Read more.

Stalk estimates there are about 7500 vets who are either homeless or on the verge of homelessness in Southern Nevada.

No one will confuse the jolly green Veterans Village 2 apartments at 50 N. 21st Street with a boutique hotel, but a fresh coat of paint does wonders on the deep end of downtown.

It’s safe to say the amenities planned for the complex, the working dream of longtime Southern Nevada affordable housing advocate Arnold Stalk, wouldn’t be found in the concierge directory of a Strip resort. But a regular visit from the 3 Square Food Bank truck and ready access to medical and mental health services can go a long way to accomplishing a goal that Stalk has chased like a sinking star for three decades: To provide a clean, safe, sober place to live for the valley’s homeless veterans population. No hero should be homeless: tackling our community's homeless veteran problem

Being home for the holidays is the American ideal.

But hundreds of Clark County veterans who defended our nation's freedom have no place to call home on this 4th of July.

Arnold Stalk dedicates his life to the community's homeless veterans problem.

"There's a whole society that's a silent problem. You don't visually see a lot of it," said Stalk, founder of Veterans Village.

Hundreds of veterans homeless in Nevada

KSNV reports that a study indicates more than 70,000 veterans are homeless across America, including hundreds in Nevada, July 24.

The sand-colored Econo Lodge on Las Vegas Boulevard just south of Charleston has offered budget-priced rooms for tourists and visitors looking for longer stays since the 1960s, but now it will serve a higher purpose: providing shelter to some of Southern Nevada’s homeless veterans.
